Too Faced Better Than False Lashes (Sephora, $35) is a mascara system that claims to give you a 42% increase in lash length and a 90% increase in volume, making it competitive with false lashes and lash extensions and treatments. It’s a three step system that uses two products: a mascara and brush-on nylon fibers.
The mascara is black, and more defining than volumizing or lengthening – which makes sense, given that the nylon fibers are where you’ll get most of the length and volume. I found the mascara worked well with the system, staying wet long enough for you to brush the fibers on and get them to stick in place, but not taking too long to dry.
The nylon fiber brush looks like it’s covered in dryer lint. When I first saw it, I thought “What have I done to myself?” because it looked so likely to irritate my eyes. Fortunately I was wrong! Some of the fibers do fly around a bit during application, but I’ve yet to have one get in my eye. (I’m a contact wearer with fairly sensitive eyes, but not the most sensitive of anyone I know.) I’ve had no irritation from this mascara, and there are a number of traditional ones I can’t wear because they bother me.
So, does this product live up to its claims? Judge for yourself with my before and after photos:
I would say I definitely got a 90% increase in volume and about a 42% increase in length (somewhere between a third and a half). I’m really happy with it, and will continue to use it, and expect to be repurchasing it.
Is this product actually better than false lashes? I think that’s impossible to say, given the variety of false lashes out there, and the variety of users and looks they’re going for. My results definitely struck me as comparable to some false lashes.
Who this product is for
This product is ideal for people who don’t want to wear false lashes, no matter how good they look, but would enjoy having the false lash look. I think it will also convert some falsie wearers, because in many cases it could be cheaper than buying and applying falsies every day. It’s certainly cheaper than lash extensions (at least where I live). It’s also less fussy to put on, and far more comfortable to wear, than falsies in my opinion. Speaking of which…
I had wondered if my lashes would feel especially stiff or heavy with this product, or if I would be aware of my mascara all day, like I am with some. It actually wears very comfortably and is softer than most volumizing mascaras. I literally forget I have it on. I’ve been wearing it for over two weeks, and I’ve had no flaking and no other signs of wear – it stays put until I take it off. And removal is similar to any other mascara. You may notice some little black fibers around your eyes as you wash it off, but they wash away just like the black runny stuff that gets around your eyes when you wash off traditional mascaras.
There is a learning curve with this product. For the first few days of use, I had some mild difficulties that haven’t happened since, because I’ve learned how to avoid them. For example, you can get fibers sticking off the end of your lashes at strange angles, but in time I’ve learned to brush the mascara through the ends over and over until it straightens up. I also had some lashes sticking together at first, probably because I was applying it very slowly and the mascara was starting to dry too early.
My application tips
I found the “blink” technique worked best with this mascara. You can see it in my YouTube video, but I’ll also describe it below:
The blink technique involves putting the wand at the base of your lashes and blinking into the wand. It separates lashes and gets the maximum amount of product on them.
The instructions tell you to use 1-2 coats at each step. I found 6 was definitely better than 3, and didn’t lead to any clumping or other signs of “too much mascara.”
Disclaimer: I received this product free for my consideration. Because your trust is far more valuable to me than any amount of freebies, my reviews will always be honest. I was not asked to give a favorable review, and would not have accepted the product under those conditions.
