MAC Sophisto Lustre Lipstick ($15, Nordstrom) is a medium warm pink semi-sheer lipstick with gold shimmer. The Lustre lipsticks are intended to be sheer, with some shades being more sheer than others. Of the ones I own, Sophisto is one of the more sheer.
Sophisto is a classic and much-loved MAC shade. It has become one of those lipsticks I grab when I’m in a hurry because I can wear it pretty much anytime with any look. It’s almost a perfectly neutral pink, and the finish catches enough light to be flattering but not enough to be frosty. Of course, my complexion is light and only slightly warm, so I went looking for reviews and swatches by people with deeper skin tones. To my surprise, this one does show up on at least some more pigmented lips, and it can look great against rather warm complexions.
This lipstick applies smoothly, feeling almost like a balm. Once applied, it doesn’t move around on the lips. It wears very well for 3 hours and then starts losing its shine – for me, that’s average to good for a semi-sheer formula. It feels a little bit hydrating, never drying, and is comfortable to wear. It has a vanilla scent, like all MAC lipsticks, but I only smell that when I’m applying it – it goes away and I never taste it.
