L’Oreal’s Colour Caresse line is a collection of 16 lipsticks which are supposed to “deliver a feather-light finish without being sticky or heavy” according to their website. This is my third review from that collection, for the shade Silky Java ($9.99 at drugstores).
Silky Java is a brown with pink, almost mauve, undertones, and like Fiery Veil and Cherry Tulle, it’s got a shiny finish and a slight translucence that makes it adapt just a bit to the color of your lips. In the tube, it looks like a nearly matte chocolate that could be too dark and too definite a brown for some complexions, but that translucence and shine which show up on the lips make it softer and much more versatile. Of course, if you were hoping for a more stark, matte brown, like it looks in the tube, then you might be disappointed. That said, it’s got enough pigment to cover my pigmented lips.
With this whole line, the lipsticks start out beautiful and shiny, and then the shine fades after a couple of hours and you’re left with a satiny finish. In the case of Fiery Veil, this works out okay for me – I don’t mind the satin finish at all, so I only bother to reapply every 3-4 hours, which I don’t mind. But with Silky Java, it can begin to feel a little dry after the shine wears down, so I feel the need to reapply every 2 hours and that’s a bit much for me.
Silky Java is one of the better shades in this line, and also one of the less dupable ones (I feel sure there are others like it out there, just not in my collection). But for me, the wear time and dry feeling are deal-breakers.
