Kat Von D’s Devotion Shade Shifter shadow (try saying that three times fast – $16, Sephora exclusive) is part of a new line of single duochrome shadows. The website calls them “bold” and “multi-dimensional” and describes the effect as “chameleon-like”, shifting according to the lighting you’re in. They’re supposed to be activated by water, and come with a large flat sponge tip which you dampen to apply.
It may look all innocent and neutral in its little pan there, but don’t be fooled: one sweep across your eye, and Devotion shifts from a deep orange that’s nearly copper in some lights to a chartreuse yellow-green, with a golden yellow in between. Even if you apply it dry, expect noticeable duochrome effects – the water only enhances it.
Like Kat Von D’s other shadows (here, here and here), the quality here is just superb. It’s very creamy and highly pigmented – even when applied dry, it glides on smoothly without a hint of fallout. It stays in place very well – no creasing, fading or budging.
Note that these are designed to be worn alone – just sweep them across, and you have shifting colors that tend to go darker in shadowed areas, like the crease or outer corner, and lighter in bright areas, like the lid. To give you an idea what I’m talking about:
You can see the deeper orange color in the crease and outer corner – and in this lighting right on the center of my lid. The golden yellow is on the rest of the lid, and you can just barely see the chartreuse shift in the inner corner. And by the way, that’s black eyeliner on the outer half of the upper lashes – where it met the shadow, it turned green in my studio lighting, but for the most part it actually did look black. That’s the thing with duochromes – they can lead to unexpected effects. But if you’re cool with that, they’re a lot of fun!
Here’s a dry and wet swatch, with dry on the left:
Even dry, the shifting it noticeable, as you can see from this swatch. The water makes the shadow more vibrant and the shifting effect more dramatic. But even dry, it’s a bold duochrome.
This is a quality duochrome shadow that does precisely what it promises. If you like duochrome, I would encourage you to check this line out. It’s creamy, highly pigmented, and it wears very well.
