Dior is featuring four Diorific lipsticks for the 2012 Holiday season, all of them red. I picked Lady because it looked like the most wearable for my light skin tone.
This was my first experience with a Dior lipstick, so I didn’t know what to expect. Based on the price tag, I decided to set my expectations high. With this lipstick, you get .12 ounce for $36, which comes out to $300 per ounce. Compare that to Mac, for example, where you get .1 ounce for $15, which is $150. Now, Mac is a bit hit or miss, but mostly I love their lipsticks. So I expected this one to be twice as good.
And it was – at least that! The formula is just barely satiny – it’s nearly matte, but has just a touch of sheen. Both the shine and the color last an exceptionally long time on the lips, and wear oh-so-comfortably. The formula is dry feeling, but not at all drying – in fact, it keeps my dry lips very comfortable for hours. It applies very smoothly with no tugging, and it’s opaque in just one pass. And when it finally starts to fade, it fades more evenly than most reds so you don’t end up looking strange. I also saw no settling into lines, feathering or any other untoward behavior with this lipstick. It just sits on my lips like a second skin.
As for the color:It’s best described as a coral red, because the undertones aren’t quite pink or orange – it’s right between the two. It could also be described as brick red, lightened. It makes teeth look white in the same way a brick red does, it’s just this shade is significantly lighter than brick. Nor is it bright – it’s a definite bold red and highly saturated, but not stark against the skin. I’ve gotten many compliments wearing it with my light, slightly warm undertones complexion. I believe it will work for a big variety of skin tones, cool and warm, and it’s got the pigmentation to stay true on pigmented lips (mine are pink enough to color shift sheerer lipsticks).
This has become my go-to lipstick whenever I’m not testing another product. It’s a great red for me, for day or night, and the formula is just everything I could have asked for. While the price tag is hefty compared to many lipsticks, I can see myself using this product up completely.
