A few months ago, Sephora was giving out samples of Bumble & Bumble Gentle Shampoo ($24 for 8 oz., Sephora) and Super Rich Conditioner. The products I’d been using were starting to dry my hair out – something that sometimes happens to me after a few months with a product – so I decided to try them. I was impressed enough by the samples to go back and purchase the 8 ounce bottles. And I was impressed enough by those to repurchase them.
Gentle Shampoo is a thick, pearlized white shampoo that claims you should only need to lather and rinse once, typically. I was skeptical about that, because it’s supposed to be gentle – how could anything but a very harsh, drying shampoo get my hair as clean with one lather as other shampoos do with two? To my surprise, it did get my hair clean with one lather – repeatedly – and without drying my hair out.
I’ve been using it for nearly six months now. I like to test shampoos for a good long time before recommending them, because sometimes how well they work seems to change over a few months for me (in fact, I’ll update this review if anything changes). I have dry, medium-fine, curly hair that likes to frizz, so it’s tricky finding something that really gets it clean without stripping it of all moisture and/or building up over time. Gentle Shampoo gets it right.
Another nice thing about this is that a little goes a long way – you don’t need to use as much of it as you use of most shampoos. My hair is pretty thick, and sometimes getting a shampoo worked all the way through it takes a lot of product. But there’s something about the texture of Gentle Shampoo that just keeps moving as you work it through with your hands. I can feel it breaking down the styling products and oils as I wash.
The lather is moderate – not a huge amount of suds, but enough that you don’t wonder whether it’s doing its job. The scent is light and refreshing – sort of cucumber.
