I recently reviewed Bobbi Brown’s High Shimmer Lip Gloss in “Hot”, and now I’m reviewing my favorite shade of the three I have from this line – Citrus ($23, Sephora). The reason this one’s my favorite is not that it’s better in quality than the others – they’re all fantastic – but that this is just such a versatile shade that seems to create a surprising amount of “pop” despite being the least bold shade I own.
“Citrus” is a peachy orange with gold and brighter orange sparkly bits. As with “Hot”, I never feel the glitter, which is surprising considering how shimmery these are. I also don’t find it sticky or uncomfortable to wear in any way, and it wears for hours – much longer than most glosses, and longer than many lipsticks.
The overall effect is more golden than orange, so this color is flattering for anyone with warm or neutral undertones, but also probably quite a few with cool undertones. It’s got enough translucence to let some of my natural pink pigmentation show through, which makes it slightly pinker on me than it would look on some. That translucence is what allows it to work with more skin tones.
Once again, the applicator is part of what makes these so pleasing to keep coming back to. It’s slightly long, with a mild slant on one edge. It always pulls out plenty of products so you’re not having to dip the wand ten times to get your lips covered. The shape of it actually makes application easier, because you can maneuver it in so many ways. Honestly, when I find a fantastic gloss with a not so fantastic applicator, I find myself enjoying it less than I should.
This particular shade has found a home in my bag because it just seems to work with so many things. I can always just throw it on with any makeup, because on its own it’s understated enough to be considered neutral. Over lipsticks, it adds a beautiful golden or peachy glow.
