I got a full-size BareMinerals Pretty Amazing Lip Color in Moxie (Nordstrom, Sephora, $16 for 0.13 oz) as a freebie with an order a while ago and recently got around to testing it. It wasn’t a color I would have chosen for myself – extremely bright bubblegum pink with a cream finish – but I didn’t hold that against it. I came away with mixed feelings about the formula, however.
I would call this a liquid lipstick. It’s a creamy formula meant to be spread on like a gloss, but it wears for a long time like a lipstick – about 4 hours for me, which is above average even for traditional lipsticks.
It goes on thick, like a waxy product, and it’s hard to get it spread out nicely over your lips. The first pass left several areas without any color, so I had to go over and over it to get color everywhere. Then I had to smooth it out with my fingers to get the coverage even. Okay, not fun, but something I could get past if I loved other things about it.
The wear time was great. It has very little slip for a cream product. Unfortunately, it showed up lip imperfections after about an hour, although it didn’t sink into lines very much. So if you can get your lips into great condition, this product would work very well once you got past the application. But if not… well, let’s just say my little dry patch looked a little more intensely bright pink than the rest of my lips.
This felt comfortable as I wore it, though a tiny bit dry. It didn’t dry out my lips, it just felt dry on them.
Personally, I wish this melted into your lips just slightly more. It kind of feels like the result I got when I mixed a creamy lipstick with a slice off my Burt’s Bees lip balm – the stick kind that’s mostly beeswax – thinking it would be moisturizing. Instead, it was just really hard to apply.
I have to apologize for the color in these swatches. I’m still learning my camera, and sometimes it struggles with pinks and reds. The color is a very bright bubblegum pink – lighter than the arm swatch photo, and brighter and bluer than the lip swatch.
If you’re looking for a definite, super-bright bubblegum pink, this is a contender. I found it fairly difficult to apply and didn’t love that it shows up imperfections in your lips because it’s not always easy to keep them in perfect condition. It didn’t settle into lines, however, so it’s workable as long as you can keep your lips conditioned. It might also work better if you put a balm underneath to even your lips out and let that sink in for about half an hour, or just use a lip primer.
