BareMinerals Exfoliating Treatment Cleanser ($26 for 2.5 ounces at Macy’s) is actually a container of dry sand-like grains that you mix with water in your hand to use. It’s designed to be gentle enough for use twice a day – it really is a cleaner that exfoliates instead of the other way around.
The idea with this product is that it replaces your cleanser and takes care of exfoliating your skin all in one step. To use this product, I put some water on my face and with my hands still wet from doing that, I poured about this amount – maybe a flat teaspoon at most – into my palm and rubbed it between my hands. It forms a sort of froth that’s surprisingly soft and doesn’t have much of that scrubbing feeling you get with a lot of exfoliants.
But it definitely exfoliates. I know because I have a skin disorder that needs exfoliation but reacts badly to being scrubbed – you can imagine how fun it is trying to find that balance! Because this product is very gentle, it took three weeks of twice-daily use before my skin reacted, whereas similar products usually irritate it in 1 to 5 uses.
The product has another recommended use, and over time I found it worked better for me. You can make it into an exfoliating mask – same way you make it into a cleansing froth, only I recommend using more of the product for a mask – and leave it on your face for a few minutes. This works very well for me and doesn’t irritate my skin.
Even though I can’t use this one as a cleanser, I’m pleased with it because it’s hard to find products that actually remove dead skin without irritating the sensitive skin beneath, and this one does the trick.
So who among you needs to take a closer look at this one?
- If the idea of replacing your cleanser and exfoliating products appeals to you
- If you can’t find an exfoliator that’s gentle enough but still effective
Like BareMineral’s Redness Remedy, this product has their Rare Minerals Complex, which is supposed to be good for your skin in various ways. I find it soothing to my easily irritated skin, which is probably why I was able to tolerate the twice-daily use as long as I did.
This is the top. You slide it back to pour out the product.
And that’s it, open and ready to pour.
